This week I got the chance to do another shoot with lou lou boutiques for their online marketing campaign. This shoot was primarily geared towards showcasing lou lou’s summer items, while also trying to push the boutique as more of a lifestyle brand. Since it’s in the heat of summer, I thought a pool themed shoot would be appropriate for the season.
So late Tuesday afternoon, my colleague, Rob, and I headed to Middleburg, VA to check out the shooting location. It was absolutely beautiful! Middleburg has a lot of really impressive homes and estates if you drive far enough out there. The house we were shooting at had a gorgeous lily pad-filled pond on the property, and a large field filled with horses. We decided to focus only on the pool area, however, as we only had about 3.5 hours to complete the shoot.
I have worked with the model, Nora, prior to this shoot. We did a spring campaign for lou lou, so it was nice to get to work with her again. I had chosen some neutral swimsuits that wouldn’t distract from the pieces we were showcasing.
First, I started out of the water, shooting Nora around the house (which was also so pretty!) in several different dresses and accessory combinations. To be honest, I don’t usually like to shoot during this time of day – it was 2 PM when we started – because the lighting is too harsh for portraits, especially during the summer. Rob brought a gold-toned reflector, which helped fill in the rather stark shadows. All in all, we made it work, but I would have preferred to shoot starting at 5 PM instead.
After about an hour and a half, we moved on to the water. This was so much fun to do, and the results were amazing! The camera I used was a Nikon d750, and the lens was the AF-S Nikkor 28-300 mm f3.5-5.6 VR, my favorite lens. I hadn’t used this camera before as it was a rental. Mine, sadly, is currently out for repair (it randomly started sporting ERR on my LCD and won’t take any photos!) I have to say, I loved using this camera. The images were all supremely clean and clear. The autofocus was spot-on and easy to pinpoint. The only caveat was that the battery didn’t seem to last too long, but at least I brought two!
I wanted the feel of the shoot to be really upscale, more of a fashion haus type look than most of my previous work, which is more bohemian and youthful. I think we achieved that, and I’m very pleased with the resulting images!
Until next time,
